We bought a Microsoft Kinect today to see what motion capture possibilities lay within. After a few hours of setting up in not the best condition we were pleasantly surprised that
getting motion captured animations onto a custom character mesh was a fairly smooth process, thanks largely to iPi software.
We had a mesh moving about with an exported rig in Lightwave 3D within the hour, all be it without weight maps and proper alignment, but the results are more than promising. We’re using the trial software at the moment but aim to try more under better conditions with an additional playstation eye camera capturing an alternative angle to refine calculations.
